A Clifton, New Jersey woman will be spending time behind bars after she admitted to stealing almost $1 million from a local trucking business.
The suspect is a 55-year-old resident of Clifton in Passaic County, NJ. She was employed as the payroll clerk for Clifford B. Finkle Jr. Inc., a trucking company in Clifton. While working at the company from June 2012 to April 2015, the suspect reportedly embezzled more than $900,000.
According to authorities, the suspect falsified the company’s payroll records and then created checks for individuals who did not actually work at the company. (Those individuals later cashed the checks and split the proceeds with the suspect.)
The trucking business owners eventually learned about the fraud and notified law enforcement.
The suspect was charged with numerous theft crimes, but she managed to avoid trial in federal court in Newark by reaching a plea agreement with prosecutors. She pleaded guilty to wire fraud charges; in exchange, prosecutors agreed to drop certain charges against her.
In addition to serving prison time, the suspect will also be required to pay a fine of at least $250,000.
