A Paterson New Jersey man is headed to state prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting a juvenile girl.
According to the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, the suspect committed the sexual offenses several years ago when the underage victim was between 12 and 14. The victim is now reportedly 19 years old.
Passaic County authorities conducted an investigation and eventually determined that enough evidence existed to arrest the suspect and charge him with multiple sex crimes, including aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, and endangering the welfare of a child.
The 39-year-old suspect, who is from Paterson NJ, did not reach a plea agreement with prosecutors in advance of a trial. As a result, the case went to trial in Passaic County Superior Court. During the criminal trial, prosecutors showed jurors a video of the suspect confessing to the sex crimes. The sexual assault victim also testified during the trial.
The jury ultimately returned guilty verdicts on the most serious criminal charges against the suspect.
The suspect is currently awaiting sentencing. He is being held at the Passaic County Jail in Paterson, New Jersey.
When the suspect is sentenced on December 2, he will face a punishment of 10-20 years in NJ State Prison on the aggravated sexual assault conviction. That’s because aggravated sexual assault is classified as a first degree felony under N.J.S.A. 2C:14-2(a).
