Wayne NJ police are looking for a woman accused of stealing a laptop computer from a local business.
The theft incident reportedly occurred just before 10:00 p.m., when the store was set to close. According to law enforcement, the suspect stole the computer from a business located in a shopping complex on Hamburg Turnpike in Wayne, New Jersey.
The owner of the business dialed 911 and alerted the Wayne Police Department. By the time Wayne NJ cops arrived at the scene, however, the suspect was long gone.
Wayne NJ investigators obtained video surveillance images from the store that reportedly show the suspect walking into the building, perusing the shelves, and then leaving the store while carrying the laptop computer.
Wayne NJ police recently released the surveillance photographs with the hope that a member of the public may be able to recognize the suspect and provide a tip about her whereabouts.
The suspect is described as a 5-foot-5 woman who may be either a teenager or a young adult. When the suspect allegedly committed the theft, she was wearing a blouse with long sleeves, dark shorts, and flip-flops.
If police are eventually able to identify and locate the suspect, she would probably be charged with shoplifting. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:20-11(b), a person who steals property valued at more than $500 can be charged with a third degree criminal offense. A conviction for third degree shoplifting could result in a sentence of 3-5 years in NJ State Prison.
