A Paterson New Jersey man has been accused of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl and showing pornographic videos to a 12-year-old boy.
According to Passaic County NJ prosecutors, the suspect committed the sexual assault in Paterson, NJ.
When law enforcement first learned about the sex crime allegations against the suspect, they began an investigation. Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit detectives talked to the victim and eventually placed the suspect under arrest.
During the course of the investigation, detectives reportedly learned that the suspect may have shown porn videos to an underage boy. This is said to have happened at least twice.
The suspect, a 33-year-old male who lives in Paterson, NJ, faces several criminal charges, including sexual assault and child endangerment.
The suspect recently appeared in Passaic County Superior Court in Paterson NJ. The case will now be sent to a grand jury for possible indictment on the sex crime charges.
If the grand jury indicts the suspect, his case could head to trial. The penalties for a conviction at trial would be severe: N.J.S.A. 2C:14-2(b) and N.J.S.A. 2C:14-2(c) classify sexual assault as a second degree crime. A conviction for second degree sexual assault could result in a sentence of 5-10 years in NJ State Prison. Beyond that, the suspect would potentially be required to register as a convicted sex offender under Megan’s Law.
After being arrested and charged, the suspect was taken to the Passaic County Jail. He was being held at the jail on a $300K bail amount. If the suspect is able to secure his release on bail, he would likely be barred from any contact with minors as long as the criminal charges against him are pending.
